Inventing The Lisa InterfaceI can’t believe I haven’t stumbled across this article before. It was originally written as a paper by a group of engineers working on the Lisa UI, and was supposed to be included in the ever essential book, The Art of Human-Computer Interface Design. Chock full of tidbits surrounding the development process, external design influences, and the opinion-powered decisions which ultimately resulted in the precursor to the Macintosh user experience. There’s a whole page of pretty prototypes too. Be sure to check out the multipane file browser from the December 1980 prototype screen that looks disturbingly similar to both the NextStep file viewer and the column view Finder in Mac OS X. Little Stevie wonderful never misses a trick does he?
