What are you doing?

Why, Twittering from my Newton, of course.

    Hi Grant,

    Have you seen this article?

By the way, thanks for keeping that Newton running as a server. It’s such a great testament to how cool the machine still is.

My wife pulled her old one from a drawer last week as we were cleaning. She changed the batteries and ta-da-ding! it was still working as it should after ten years in a drawer. Try that with a Windows Mobile based device.

    Hey Jensa.

Yes, I did read that article (and several others along the same speculative lines). It will be interesting to see how Apple approaches the whole idea of a “sub-laptop / handheld / touch screen device” market. I think that it makes a lot of sense on some levels, given the technology they’ve integrated into the iPhone and iPod touch. But then again, Mr Jobs has been adamantly opposed to anything resembling a Newton or the traditional PDA hardware model.

We’ll have to wait and see.

To be sure, I’ll probably buy whatever Apple comes up with — but it won’t be replacing my Newton any time soon. The Newton isn’t about the hardware, it’s about the user interface, the software and the built-in intelligence — when combined with the hardware.
