Scheduling conflict.

They have some nerve scheduling the WWDC the exact same week as TypeCon this year. What were they thinking down in Cupertino? Don’t they realize that some of us folks love hobnobbing with the geekerati about upcoming operating systems and new Mac hardware just as much as rubbing elbows with the typographic cognoscenti? Apparently not. Not that I was actually planning on attending the WWDC this year, but I dearly love to track the technical tidbits and filter through the newsworthy buzz. Now I have two events that I have to keep track of. I say move WWDC back a month or two where it belongs and leave summer to the type aficionados.

Man, Apple shows ain’t even interesting anymore. Apple’s all like “We took some good and simple ideas and blew them way out of proportion to make them look cooler in our stores.” and “We’ve got a pretty good operating system, but you won’t give us any money for subtle and gradual refinements, so we bloated it up with some silly features you’ll never use but will be unable to remove because that would break the features you do use.” and everybody’s like “Wow, so innovative!” and “I think I’m sexually lusty for that software!”

And then like, three or four shareware developers are usually like “Man, I’m totally outta business now. Drag.”

    I’m lusty for type. :’(

To be completely honest, I agree with most of those points. I think the underlying structure of the improvements is great stuff, but Cupertino does seem to be putting way too much emphasis on the eye candy… still. It was a good approach to get OS X noticed out of the gate, but now it’s time to finesse and refine — not add more bells and whistles. Sigh. Apple developer conferences simply have not been that same since they cancelled the Newton.

“geekerati”, “cognoscenti”, and “aficionados”. Goodness, Grant, my head is vertiginous.
